Stormwater Best Management Practices for Businesses

Keeping dumpster lids closed and refuse areas clean are among the best management practices that help prevent stormwater pollution.

Your business plays an important role in keeping our creeks and the San Francisco Bay free of pollution. Business activities, such as car washing, food preparation, trash disposal, animal care, and maintenance activities, can produce pollutants that can discharge into the storm drain system and impact water quality.

The City of Palo Alto works closely with businesses to ensure that stormwater is kept as clean as possible. The City provides outreach and education, and conducts inspections to enforce the requirements of the Municipal Code to comply with the San Francisco Bay Municipal Regional Stormwater NPDES Permit (MRP).

Business activities can impact both the storm drain and the sanitary sewer systems, and each system has its own pollution prevention requirements. Read below to learn about stormwater regulations and best management practices (BMPs). Learn more about sanitary sewer regulations and permitting on cleanbay.org

What are stormwater BMPs?

BMPs are “Best Management Practices” that guide businesses in good housekeeping, preventative maintenance, material handling, and spill prevention. By following BMPs such as regular cleaning and inspection of outdoor areas or checking equipment for leaks, your business ensures it is not allowing pollutants to enter the storm drain system.

All businesses are mandated to follow the General Stormwater BMPs. Specific industries may be subject to additional requirements. Download the General BMP Factsheet and other factsheets that are relevant to your industry below.
