Library 5-Star Rating

Palo Alto City Library was recently recognized by the Library Journal’s Index of Public Library Service, as a 5-star library, the highest possible recognition and an elevation from last year’s 4-star rating.

Ratings are based on per capita library use for materials circulation, visits to the library, event attendance, and use of public computers and WIFI. The 2022 scores and ratings are based on FY2020 data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Public Library Survey of libraries. For 2022—based on 2020 data—5,359 public libraries nationwide received LJ Index scores, and 258 received stars. The Library is one of 13 California libraries to receive a star rating and one of 5 libraries to receive a 5-star rating.

This is a significant achievement and recognition, gaining a 5-star rating during a difficult year as libraries manage through the global pandemic. With limitations due to the pandemic including required closures, less funding due to the pandemic and economic shifts, and other operational issues, the library managed through with innovative changes like Sidewalk Service, virtual events, and eResources.

The Palo Alto City Library offers five branches, including a children’s library and provides programming for all ages.
