Project Description

The Natural Gas Main Replacement Project 24B will replace approximately 20,000 linear feet of natural gas mains and services with polyethylene (PE) pipe. The project will occur in the neighborhoods of University Park and Crescent Park, a business district complex adjacent on Geng Road, Town & Country Village Plaza, and along Embarcadero Road between Alma and Emerson. The City has identified gas mains and services made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and black-wrapped steel (BWP) that are near or past their operational life expectancy, have become brittle over time, and are corroded due to the lack of cathodic protection. In addition, this project includes installing approximately 145 linear feet of 6-inch PVC water main and replacing three existing water services at Town & Country Village Plaza.

Scope of Work

  • Replacing the gas distribution system with PE.
  • Installing PE gas main and gas services at the business complex on Geng Road, Town & Country Village Plaza, and University Avenue.
  • Installing PVC water main and replacing three existing water services at Town & Country Village.

Project Status

This project started in January 2024.

Construction on University Ave between Webster St and Fulton St and on Middlefield Rd between Hamilton Ave and Lytton Ave will be completed by the end of March 2025.

Construction on Embarcadero Rd between Alma Street and Emerson Street begins April 7, 2025. This area was added to the original GMR 24B Project scope of work due to the need for gas leak repairs, and to complete the work prior to the City installing new bike lines along Embarcadero Road.
