Bicycle Registration

The Palo Alto Police Department encourages all residents to register their bicycles.  We recommend using Bike Index, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2013 that is the most widely used and successful bicycle registration service in the world.  The Bike Index has over 573,000 cataloged bicycles and tens of thousands of daily searches.

Registration is simple and free.  Simply visit the Bike Index website, create a free account, and register your bicycle.  In addition to the basic information requested, we recommend that you also upload a photo of your bicycle and consider joining the "City of Palo Alto" group in the "Groups + Ownership" category.  If your bike is ever stolen, log in to your Bike Index account and mark it as "stolen."  This will allow anyone who finds your bike (including law enforcement personnel) to contact you and get it back to you.

For more information about bicycling in Palo Alto, including our robust Safe Routes to School program, visit the Office of Transportation website.

If your bike was stolen in Palo Alto and you have no suspect information, visit our File a Police Report page to report the theft to us.  If you have suspect information, or if the crime just occurred, please promptly call our 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413.
