Paul Carey (1904-2000) was active in the Bay Area art world all his life, and sometimes was called a “modernist.” Mr. Carey was born in Palo Alto in 1904. He grew up in a home on Lytton Avenue, attended local schools and was in one of the first classes to graduate from the present Palo Alto High School. Paul Carey eventually moved to the East Bay and worked in San Francisco, but he maintained many Palo Alto roots. He was primarily a landscape painter, but he worked in so many different styles as to defy classification.
Carey's paintings represented in the City's Public Art Collection are a sampling of some of his styles and choices of subject matter, from the dunes of Pescadero to the hills around Mt. Diablo.
