José Joaquin Figueroa
About the artist:
José Figueroa is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, photography, video, and sculpture. Drawing has become a cornerstone of his practice, serving as a portable and grounding force that connects him to the people, places, and moments that shape his life. Figueroa is fascinated with the intersection of the mundane and the extraordinary, often seeking to capture grandiose or humble elements of everyday life.
Figueroa has exhibited at YBCA, Southern Exposure, Berkeley Art Museum, and Embark Gallery in the Bay Area, as well as the Drawing Center and Longwood Arts Project in New York, among others. He attended the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture, earned a BFA from the Cooper Union. He completed his MFA at the University of California, Berkeley. Through his diverse artistic lens, Figueroa reflects on the transient nature of moments, the complexities of intertwined identities, and the impossibility of a single perspective.
