Callan Porter Romero
About the artist:
Callan Porter-Romero grew up in Oakland, CA in a multi-racial household. Porter-Romero’s Black, Japanese, and Mexican heritage allowed her to have a well-rounded perspective on historical events and experiences, particularly those relevant to Oakland. Porter-Romero graduated from University of California, Los Angeles with a BS in Ecology and Evolution, and has worked simultaneously as a scientist and an artist. She has shown artwork publicly through murals and juried exhibitions, including the 2020 and 2023 de Young Open at the de Young Museum and the Berkeley Art Center. Apart from expanding her own understanding of her art expression, Porter-Romero also co-founded an art collective that supports emerging artists local to Oakland and the greater Bay Area with exhibitions and public art installations.
