About the Artist
Known for making highly detailed sculptures of medical instruments like stethoscopes, syringes, and monitoring equipment, Jeremy Burleson also explores his interest in medical tools and accessories on paper. His energetic line drawings of figures, bottles, and syringes may also be accompanied by images of balloons or cacti.
Burleson’s work has been collected and exhibited for over a decade and several of his works were included in the traveling exhibition Create co-curated by Larry Rinder and Matthew Higgs, organized by the Berkeley Art Museum in 2011.
NIAD is a progressive art studio for adult artists with developmental disabilities. Sparked by the nationwide deinstitutionalization of disabled people, Florence and Elias Katz, an artist, and a psychologist, founded three Bay Area non-profit art studios―Creative Growth in 1974, NIAD in 1982 (Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development), and Creativity Explored in 1983. These programs often collaborate and share resources, and serve as a model for the field of art and disability worldwide.
