Marion Coleman

About the artist

Marion Coleman grew up in a family of quiltmakers. An East Bay resident, she was a socially-conscious master quilter, a leader in African American quilting, and a social worker whose community work and art practice highlighted central issues in Black East Bay history. In 2000, she helped found the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland, whose quilts use local imagery to address social, racial, and environmental injustice. Marion passed away in 2019.
