May is Asian American Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and we are celebrating with a series of events hosted by the Library, Community Services Department, and many community partners. These groups have come together to deliver a series of events for our entire community to recognize and celebrate the culture and contributions of our AANHPI community. Human Relations Commission Survey on the Lived Experiences of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in Palo Alto

The Human Relations Commission seeks to better understand the lived experience of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in Palo Alto. Participate in a short survey open to anyone who lives, works, visits, goes to school or worships in Palo Alto. Survey data will be presented to the City Council to help us better understand and serve the AANHPI community.

Upcoming Events

Stanford Chinese Music Ensemble: Spring Recital and Stanford Gu-zheng Ensemble- The Stanford Chinese Music Ensemble is a group of Stanford students from all disciplines, drawn together by their interest in Chinese music. Led by renowned gu-zheng player Hui You, the ensemble explores both traditional and contemporary pieces. The Spring Recital event takes place on Friday, May 5, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. in Stanford’s Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The Stanford Gu-zheng Ensemble takes place on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at 7 p.m. in the Braun Music Center Campbell Recital Hall.

Family Storytime: Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month- Join Librarian Devon for a special AAPI Month storytime at Children’s Library. Come sing, rhyme, and read stories with us! While this storytime will be geared towards those older than 2 years, all ages are welcome! This event will be held twice; once on Tuesday, May 9 from 11–11:30 a.m. and once on Saturday, May 13 from 11–11:30 a.m.

Button Making Pop-up for Teens: Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month- Drop by Mitchell Park Library after school on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 for button making in the Teen Zone! Use old manga and comics to make a unique design or create your own from scratch. We will also have designs featuring famous Asian American and Pacific Islander figures in celebration of AAPI Heritage month!

Author Event: Nicole Chen- Do you love books and boba milk tea? Join us for a middle grade author event in honor of AAPI Heritage Month. On Saturday May 20 we will host Nicole Chen, author of the middle grade book It’s Boba Time for Pearl Li! and local Palo Alto mom Olivia Chen, co-founder of Twrl Milk Tea, who is passionate about providing great-tasting artisanal milk tea and boba.

Movie Screening: Everything Everywhere All at Once- Join us in celebrating AAPI Heritage Month with a screening of the Academy Award winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). The movie will be accompanied by everything bagels (of course) and a thematic craft. This event takes place on Sunday, May 28 from 1–3:30 p.m. and is for adults and seniors only.
