Japanese Exchange Students Tour City Hall

Every March since 1995, students from Tsuchiura Junior High in Japan travel to Palo Alto for a week to participate in an exchange program with host families from Palo Alto Unified School District. As part of the tradition each year, the students come to City Hall, as they did on March 18, and they receive a warm welcome and proclamation from City Council. Then come each summer, the exchange is reciprocated, with our local students heading to Japan as part of the program.

The 16 students from Tsuchiura who visited this March had an opportunity to shadow students at JLS and Greene Middle Schools, tour Google and have lunch in the cafeteria, and traveled to Santa Cruz and Yosemite.

This student exchange relationship superseded our Sister City partnership with Tsuchiura, Ibarak Japan that is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. To commemorate the anniversary, Tshuchiura will welcome a delegation from Palo Alto in October.
