Pets in Need Opens its Doors

Palo Alto's partnership with Pets in Need began on February 19, 2019 as the non-profit organization assumed operations of the City's animal shelter on East Bayshore Road. As part of the agreement, the no-kill shelter will also provide animal care services for Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.

The Pets in Need Board of Directors approved the $3.7 million deal in December. The City is funding the $3.4 million remodeling and expansion of the facility. The capital improvement plan also includes an expanded medical suite, 16 new dog kennels, and a modular office and classroom.

The partnership is expected to save the City approximately $400,000 a year.
