Baylands Golf Links Grand Opening Set for Memorial Day Weekend

The finishing touches are being put on the greens of the newly redesigned Baylands Golf Links ahead of the grand opening that will take place during Memorial Day weekend. Formerly known as the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course, the 18-hole-course located in the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve will officially open to the public for play on Saturday, May 26. The grand opening celebration event will take place between 2-to-6 p.m. and will feature music, equipment demos, golf activities for children and adults, and much more.

Nearly two years in the works, the transformed greens offer elevated scenic views of the Baylands and San Francisco Bay, while boasting five par three holes, five par five holes, and a maximum length of 6,800 yard layout. Other features include a shared 20,000 square foot green complex on holes three and 15, and two separate greens on hole 14. One is a classic punchbowl design, while the alternative is on a small peninsula into a wetland part of the site.

Designed by architect Forrest Richardson, the enhanced, new links style course blends with the natural open habitat of the area and restored 55 acres of native Baylands vegetation and wetlands. The footprint of the turf shrank from 135 acres to 81 acres- a 40 percent reduction that will save on both maintenance and water costs. Seashore paspalum, a saltwater-tolerant grass planted on the fairways and rough areas can be irrigated with a higher percent of recycled water, which will also help result in a 35 percent reduction in potable water usage.

The public is invited to preview walking tours of the course on Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22 between 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  No RSVP is needed.  Then on Thursday, May 24, the media is invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony and to witness the first official tee-off by Councilmember Karen Holman.

The transformed course is suitable for beginners and experienced players alike. For more information and to set-up a tee time, go to:
