Mayor’s Annual Tree Planting Ceremony Includes a Special Tribute

The 21st Annual Canopy Tree Planting and Awards Ceremony welcoming Palo Alto's new mayor, Greg Scharff, will also include a special tree planting tribute for outgoing Police Chief Dennis Burns, who is retiring after nearly 35 years of dedicated service with the City.

This year’s ceremony will take place on Thursday, Jan. 26 at Mitchell Park Community Center from 5:15-7 p.m. The two trees will be planted near the Magical Bridge Playground.

"I’m honored to be recognized to join in this annual Palo Alto tradition by an organization that works tirelessly to provide a healthy, urban forest environment where residents can thrive and play," said Chief Burns.

The Canopy Tree Awards take place each year following the tree planting ceremony, recognizing those who have made significant contributions to growing healthy trees and healthy communities.

Last year, Mayor Pat Burt planted his tree in the grove at Lucie Stern Community Center.  You can see where all the mayors’ trees are planted by clicking on this map.

The public is invited to join the festivities and encouraged to RSVP to by January 20.
