New Library Bikes Deliver Pop-Up Library Services to Community

The Palo Alto Library is on the move, thanks to the purchase of two bikes that are bringing mobile book check-outs and other popular services directly to the community. Dubbed Bike PALS (Palo Alto Library Services), the library bikes had a soft launch in August after grant money made the new program possible.

One bike resembles an ice cream cart, and carries library and craft materials, as well as pop-up storytime equipment. The other bike comes with a large basket enabling it to hold library supplies and maps on safe routes to the City's five library branches.

"Part of the goals and objectives for Bike PALS is to educate customers about library services that are available to them wherever they are, bring services to people who can't come to the library to get them, and to hear from the community about other interests where the library may be able to assist," said Christine Pennington, Youth Services Librarian.

Bike PALS are scheduled to bring their mobile services to a variety of upcoming community events:

• Friday, Sept. 9 – Magical Bridge Summer Music Concert , 6-9 p.m.
• Saturday, Sept. 10 – Canopy Tree Walk, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m
• Sunday, Sept. 11 – FOPAL Sale, 11a.m.-2 p.m.
• Wednesday, Sept. 14 – City Hall Health Fair, 11:30a.m.-2 p.m.
• Friday, Sept. 16 – Moonlight Run , 5-10 p.m.
• Monday, Sept.19 - Paly High Club Day
• Sunday, Sept.25 – California Ave Farmer's Market ,8 a.m.-12p.m.

In addition to the mobile library services, educational library programs on bike safety and maintenance are planned, as well as bicycle repair stations that will be placed at the Rinconada and Mitchell Park Libraries.

"Libraries around the Bay Area have experimented with a variety of services related to bicycling. Palo Alto, a hub of bicycle transportation goals, appreciates the generosity of the Friends’ donation and the Innovation Grant to build on a successful model," said Jenny Jordan, Library Manager of Youth Services.
