Council Raises Minimum Wage
The Palo Alto City Council voted unanimously to set a local minimum wage at $11 an hour beginning on Jan. 1, 2016, and set a goal of raising the rate to $15 by 2018. Palo Alto joined several other local cities including Mountain View and Sunnyvale in adopting a citywide minimum wage ordinance. Palo Alto has not had a local minimum wage previously, and followed the minimum wage set by state law. Currently, state law requires a minimum wage of $9 per hour, which will increase to $10 on January 1, 2016. The City's lowest City hourly wage earner is paid $9.89 an hour. Council agreed to review the ordinance as it moves forward to look at possible exceptions.
