Construction began January 13, 2009 on the San Antonio Road Street Tree Replacement, Median and Road Improvement Project. Work will occur between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to avoid peak commute hours. On Friday, January 30th, the tree removal phase was complete. Grinding of the tree stumps continues through February 21, 2009. The soil excavation will began on the San Antonio Road medians the week of February 9th. Nearly all of the soil in the top few feet of the medians is being replaced due to poor soil quality. The soil excavation will be occurring over the next few weeks, including dust control measures. The contractor is required to perform their work in compliance with a Health and Safety Plan which must meet the environmental study and City of Palo Alto's contract specifications. The installation of the new irrigation system and tree root barriers will follow the soil excavation. Traffic control measures will remain in effect for the duration of the project, with at least one lane open in each direction at all times.
The initial work phase, will includes removal of existing street trees and their invasive surface roots, repair and replacement of deteriorating concrete curb and gutter, installation of an irrigation system and new, more sustainable street trees and plant material. The replacement trees will include non-invasive deciduous and evergreen canopy trees for the medians and a screening hedge on the frontage road median. This phase of the work will be followed by the repair and resurfacing of asphalt road surface scheduled for fall 2009.
