Information from the October 8th Community meeting is available as follows:
The California Avenue Streetscape Improvements project has two phases. Phase I is to address the need to replant trees along California Avenue from El Camino Real to the fountain area near the CalTrain station. Phase II includes the replacement of furnishings, such as benches, bike racks, newspaper racks, kiosks, trash and recycling containers, street resurfacing and restriping. Phase II also includes the possibility of adding potted plants and reducing the traffic lanes from two to one lane in each direction to encourage a more shared use road with bicycles.
Phase I, the Street Tree Replanting Plan, has been widely debated at two public meetings on October 8 and Octobe 22, at an Architectural Review Board meeting on October 15, at a Planning and Transportation Commission meeting on October 28, and at a second Architectural Review Board meeting on November 5. The City has worked with staff arborists, two independent arborists, Barrie Coate and Dave Muffly, and landscape architects from Royston Hanamoto Alley and Abey, to incorporate the comments and recommendations discussed at the various meetings. A street tree replanting plan, with design elements reflecting the character of California Ave, will be presented at the City Council meeting on November 16..City staff is recommending City Council approve a Mitigated Negative Declaration for Phase I of the California Avenue Improvements and approve the revised Street Tree Replanting Plan.
