Speaker Series #1: Planning for Sustainable Development

This is the first in a series of presentations to provide insight and guidance for preparing the City's Comprehensive Plan amendment.  Assembly Bill 32 (AB32) and Senate Bill 375 (SB 375) are intended to create a framework to help California meet the challenges of climate change.

Ted Droettboom from the Joint Policy Committee and Kenneth Kirkey from ABAG will explain how local governments play a crucial role in helping the state implement these new laws and helping to preserve the high quality of life that California residents value.

The Department of Planning and Community Environment is sponsoring a series of informative presentations in conjunction with the City’s ongoing updates of the Comprehensive Plan and Housing Element. Staff will invite planning, transportation, urban design, economic and other professionals to present information that may help to provide context and ideas for the Comprehensive Plan and Housing Element discussions. The Council, boards and commissions and the public will be invited to these forums. Staff plans to schedule a joint Council/Planning and Transportation Commission session early in 2010 to present and discuss some of the key issues confronting the City in the updates.

The initial forum is Senate Bill 375 (Planning for Sustainable Development) will be discussed at the initial forum, outlining the implications for cities of State legislation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and focusing development around transit and pedestrian-oriented design.

The second forum will consider recent and anticipated development trends in California cities.

Subsequent sessions will be planned on a monthly or bi-monthly basis through 2010.
