Description: 24-hr hotline: assists those who are feeling suicidal or in a crisis and need to talk to someone. Multi-lingual counselors are available. Provides immediate and confidential emotional support and crisis intervention to those in life-threatening situations. Volunteers are specifically trained in crisis and suicide intervention and prevention. Speakers’ Bureau: volunteers and staff give presentations on risk factors for suicide, suicide intervention, suicide awareness, and community resources to community groups (schools, professional and charitable organizations, etc.) Presentations are designed to enhance communication and listening skills for those who may be called upon in a crisis. The presentation is tailored to a group’s specific needs and ranges from one-hour presentations to two-day workshops. The Survivors of Suicide (SOS) Group: provides grieving families and friends with grief counseling, new survivor outreach, service referrals and support groups. The adult support groups meet weekly for eight weeks. Crisis Intervention Support Groups: trained volunteers provide support for community members dealing with life stresses, relationship problems, and other suicide and suicide prevention issues. Postvention and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing: aids in reducing trauma and possible contagion when suicide or a traumatic suicide attempt occurs. In collaboration with the Mental Health Department Disaster Coordinator, Suicide and Crisis Service assists schools or businesses when a suicide or suicide attempt occurs. Staff and trained volunteers are available to meet the immediate needs of the affected community and also help the survivors deal with the trauma of loss and begin the healing process.
